Free Standing ED Ground Breaking at Red Road in Miramar

Memorial Healthcare System celebrated a major milestone with the groundbreaking of its new Freestanding Emergency Department (FSED) in Miramar—an advanced facility designed to expand access to life-saving emergency care for adults and children in South Broward and Northwest Miami-Dade.

Located at the intersection of Miramar Parkway and Red Road, the state-of-the-art 16,800 sq. ft. emergency department will feature

  • 13 private examination rooms,
  • a dedicated pediatric treatment area,
  • a trauma/resuscitation room,
  • advanced imaging capabilities,
  • and an on-site lab—all tailored to provide rapid, high-quality emergency care close to home.

“Today’s groundbreaking is more than just a construction project,” said Interim CEO Shane Strum. “It demonstrates our commitment to investing in the health and safety of our residents, children, and workforce. Last year, Memorial emergency departments treated more than 440,000 patients, and every year that number grows. This new facility will add critical capacity to our emergency care network, ensuring that patients receive exceptional treatment close to home.”

The demand for emergency services in the region continues to rise, with population growth projected to increase by 10% by 2029. The Miramar FSED, along with Memorial’s redevelopment of its Pembroke Pines emergency facility, is expected to serve more than 32,850 patients annually and ease congestion at nearby emergency departments.

“Nearly 70% of ER visits nationwide are for non-life-threatening conditions that still require urgent medical attention," said Randy Katz, MD, district medical director of Emergency Services at Memorial Healthcare System. "Having a freestanding ED helps us manage these cases more efficiently, ensuring that our five adult EDs and three pediatric EDs across the system can stay focused on the most critical, life-threatening emergencies.”

The $34.8 million project will create 60 full-time clinical and administrative jobs and is slated for completion by summer or early fall 2026. Local officials, healthcare leaders, and community members joined Memorial executives at the event, which featured a ceremonial dirt toss and the unveiling of renderings for the cutting-edge facility.
