Memorial Healthcare System Deploys AI-Powered GI Genius™ to Enhance Early Detection of Colorectal Cancer
April 22, 2025

Colorectal cancer (colon cancer / rectal cancer) is the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, projected to claim approximately 52,900 lives in 2025, according to the American Cancer Society. However, when detected early, colorectal cancer has a more than 90% survival rate—underscoring the critical need for improved screening and detection.
To advance early detection efforts, Memorial Healthcare System has introduced GI Genius™, an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven technology designed to enhance the detection of precancerous polyps during colonoscopies. This innovative tool is now being deployed across Memorial’s colorectal surgery program to improve patient outcomes and reduce colorectal cancer deaths.
“Colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable cancers, yet far too many cases go undetected until later stages,” said Michael Dolberg, MD, colorectal surgeon at Memorial Healthcare System. “The GI Genius module enhances what we already do by using AI to identify potential abnormalities during colonoscopies in real time. This is preventive medicine at its finest, helping us detect precancerous polyps sooner and potentially saving lives.”
GI Genius serves as an AI-assisted “second set of eyes,” identifying polyps in real time that may be difficult to detect due to their size, shape, or location within the colon’s complex structure. By integrating this technology into routine screenings, Memorial’s colorectal specialists can significantly increase polyp detection rates, improving patient outcomes and reducing the risk of colorectal cancer.
As colorectal cancer rates continue to rise among younger adults, Dr. Dolberg urges individuals aged 45 and older—as well as those with family history or other risk factors—to schedule routine screenings. Early detection remains the best defense against colorectal cancer, and innovative tools like GI Genius are making these screenings even more effective.
